It’s that time of year again, when everyone starts thinking about what changes they might make to their home in the next few months. In January and February, many of us start to get the DIY itch. After the mayhem and excitement of Christmas is well and truly over, it leaves some productive time to get a few bits and bobs done around the home.
If you are thinking about redecorating or repainting your home this year, you might want to consider Pantone’s colour of the year. Last year it was rose quartz and serenity blue, but this year’s front runner is a totally different colour. Expect a shift from popular pale pink and blue colours to more earthy, natural looking shades. Why? Because the top colour for 2017 is apparently none other than green. The exact shade of green is called greenery 15-0343.
You might be wondering which rooms of your home this shade might be appropriate for. Well, the answer is all of them. Green can add some freshness to any room in your home, whether it’s your bathroom, kitchen or even your bedroom. This colour was chosen for numerous reasons, one of which being that it is a relaxing and comforting colour.
Many people feel 2016 wasn’t exactly the easiest or best of years, although that’s a matter of opinion. It seems Pantone’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman agrees: ‘Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment.’
Studies have shown that simply looking at the colour green can improve your mood and reduce stress levels. If you’ve got a busy year ahead, then you may want to fill your home with delightful, calming shades of green. A lot of people shy away from green, as they feel it can look a bit too garish, but it really does depends what shade you go for.
If Pantone’s ‘greenery’ shade is just that little bit too bright for you, then consider paler, more subtle shades of green. You can get extremely subtle shades of green that are so pale they almost appear white at first glance. These shades can work really well in your living room, keeping it nice and bright yet adding some natural earthy hues.
Colours to pair with green
If you absolutely love the green shade, but aren’t sure what it goes well with, don’t worry, we’ve got some ideas. This shade of green goes surprisingly well with pastel colours, as well as metallics, neutrals, bright colours and deep shades. Pantone have also given people a helping hand by suggesting their own colours which they feel complement their colour of the year. ‘Nature’s neutral, PANTONE Greenery is a versatile “trans-seasonal” shade that lends itself to many color combinations.’ You can see the exact colour combinations here.
